SciFi Film Festival’s 12th Annual Costume Parade

On a Sunday afternoon, as the sun struggled to break through the East London haze in an attempt at a British springtime, a large, genre-dedicated crowd baffled local residents by appearing in their Sunday Best at the Stratford Picturehouse.

Kicking off the 12th annual SciFi Festival, this year’s costume parade featured outfits spanning every imaginable corner of the sci-fi and fantasy spectrum, from stormtroopers to steampunk, Black Cat to Batman.

There were a lot of familiar faces from this year’s SciFi Weekender in Wales, including Seven of Nine, Judge Dredd, and a pair of life-size Daleks that can be driven from the inside. We even spotted a junior Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger.

Lucky pre-registered attendees were also treated to an after-party with music, games, and a special guest appearance. Can you guess Who?

IMG_20130428_153403This year’s parade celebrated the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who on British television screens with almost every reincarnation of the Doctor (and even some assistants) appearing in full costume.

In a rare moment of collaboration  the Cybermen and Daleks come together to lead the front of the parade

No SciFi parade is complete without a full complement of Imperial troopers and the Big Deep Breather himself, Vader

The programme for the rest of the festival is available here:, but some of our favourite highlights are:

  • Wed. 1st May – The Arthur C. Clarke Award ceremony (we’ll be there – come say ‘Hi!’)
  • Sat. 4th May – Anime All-Nighter at the Stratford Picturehouse
  • Mon. 6th May – SciFi London pub quiz

We look forward to seeing some of you budding newbies and hardcore fans over the next two weeks. Excelsior!
