Top Ten Best SFF News This Week! (06/09/13)

Welcome back to the weekly SFF round-up of the top ten best, funniest, coolest or most inane things that have happened in the last week and are guaranteed to get you through Friday boredom.

This week we have everything from machine gun wielding raccoons, Dinobots and Deadpool meets Ninja Turtles to Loki eating cookies, Fantasy Rosie Riveters and a walk-out at DC over LGBT issues.

But first, here’s one of the greatest videos you’ll see today.

10. Darth Vadar playing flaming bagpipes on a unicycle…

Darth Vadar. On a unicycle. Playing flame throwing bagpipes. ’nuff said.

9. DINOBOTS in Transformers 4!

The Transformers films have regressed to become big dumb movies, directed by a guy famous for big dumb movies and now the lead character is Mark Wahlberg, a big dumb actor. Everything’s sounding pretty big and pretty dumb… so how do you remedy this?Throw in some BIG DUMB DINOBOTS and suddenly the world is a great place to live again!

8. Loki Likey Cookies

Next I want to see the Hulk Vs Oscar The Grouch in a green-off or Thor singing the Rubber-Ducky song with Bert and Ernie.

7. Lovecraft’s Original Sketches for Mountains Of Madness

Screen shot 2013-09-06 at 00.19.12

Lovecraft had a brain that spewed monsters like Frankenstein’s Play-doh press. This week some of his notes and sketches from At The Mountains Of Madness hit the SF/F world and they’re exactly what you’d expect.

6. Bradley Cooper Cast As Rocket Racoon

The coolest, craziest, most machine-gun happy raccoon in the universe now has a voice! Yup, Mr Silver-Linings himself, Bradley Cooper is set to wise-crack his way through the forthcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy film. Expect Hangover/raccoon mash-ups…

5. Little Kaiju

This is a short film about a little kaiju (monster) wandering around Tokyo.
It’s beautiful and cool and wonderful and special and will make you smile.

4. DC Block Gay Marriage – Writers of Batwoman leave

Tsk tsk indeed DC comics. Good LGBT things were being done with this comic book, from a lesbian protagonist to a transgender supporting character, plus the stories and action were kick-ass. and now you’ve gone and blown it.

This version of Batwoman was arguably created in reaction to Marvel’s gay wedding between Northstar and Kyle so DC, why you now no want gay wedding? Time to be careful me thinks, especially after the whole Superman/Orson Scott Card debacle.

3. Fantasy Ladies Do Labor Day

Sci-fi, fantasy and super heroines pay tribute to Rosie the Riveter to celebrate Labor Day in the USA. There’s loads more awesome pictures at the link.

2. RIP Sci-Fi Maestro Frederik Pohl

Sci-fi supremo Frederik Pohl passed away this week. Winner of three Nebula and four Hugo awards, Pohl was also the recipient of the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award and inducted in to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall Of Fame in 1998. Not only was he a brilliant sci-fi writer but also a champion for all science fiction. He even won a Hugo for Best Fan Writer for his blog which you can read here.

1. Hayao Miyazaki Retires From Filmmaking!

The great Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and director of animated classics such as Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, My Neighbour Totoro, and Ponyo has announced that he’s retiring from the movie making malarkey.

Head on over to Kotaku where Miyazaki explains his reasons for retiring.

Mutant With A Mouth

Deadpool and Ninja Turtles are two of my very favourite things. In fact, I’m wearing my Raphael socks as I type this.

If I was the kind of guy to make SQUEE noises or use words like Joy-Gasm then I would do both of those things right now.
